"A great friend, neighbour and outstanding member of the community" - some of the tributes that poured in following the death of John "Willy" O' Gorman. Born in Glenshask in May 1940 into a family of three with his brother Michael and sister Margaret. He spent much of his early working life in the County Council stationed in Ballyduff and its environs. He moved to Lismore in 1976 where with his wife Pat bought the local newsagents, formerly Moore's of Main Street, where he would spend the rest of his adult life running a successful business with Pat and rearing their three children Brian, Kieran and Sharon. John himself played with Ballyduff and then went on to win a junior title with Ballysaggart in 1972 beating a fancied Mount Sion side in the final. He was to give a man of the match performance with a tally of three points to his credit. He had a keen and deep interest in all things GAA especially at juvenile level where his two sons excelled on the field. Kieran went on to win that famous U21 All-Ireland title with Waterford in 1992. In 1993 he was a selector with the Lismore senior team along with his neighbour Michael McGrath and Willie Lineen. This was the pinnacle of success for John as the News and Star Cup came over the bridge into Lismore for the second time in three years. A lot of hurleys were broken on the field in those years but were sanded, glued and banded by John every evening after work, a hobby that he excelled in ensuring that the lads weren't short of ash for the next big game. John who has now joined his wife Pat in eternal life will be looking down on their grandchildren who are now wearing the Lismore and Ballysaggart colours with pride in both hurling and football and will be happy with what they see, skill and talent that will surely bring honours to both clubs for many years to come. Ar dheis Dé go a anam. Juvenile Officers and committee step down Lismore GAA Club would like to sincerely thank Robbie O' Sullivan, Kevin O' Mahony and John Howard and all their committee members past and present as they conclude a very successful six year term in running the juvenile club. The respective chairman, secretary and treasurer left no stone unturned in organising many fundraising activities and tournaments throughout their tenure. They have presided over Division A in all underage grades of hurling and have set the standard for officiating a successful juvenile GAA club. While it is regrettable that they step down, it opens the door for new members to become involved and to direct the club into the future. We wish the future officers and committee the very best of luck. Congratulations to Stephen Bennett Lismore GAA Club would like to congratulate Stephen Bennett on his recent achievement. Stephen was crowned 2019 Waterford Hurler of the Year at the Local Bar Waterford GAA awards held at Lawlors Hotel recently. In what was an experimental side, we remained competitive throughout with every chance of coming away with a win. A goal from Patrick Curran (1-06, 6f) gave the hosts an early platform but Cork drew level and Tommy O'Connell's goal in the 26th minute, followed by first two of three points from play by Jack O'Connor helped the visitors into a 1-10 to 1-05 interval lead. Waterford did manage to cut the gap to a single point with ten minutes remaining but Conor Lehane's accuracy from frees ensured the Rebels closed it out. Well done to Lismore's Iarlaith Daly and Jack Prendergast who both featured strongly in each half.
