As Lismore took to the field last Sunday evening to play a game which has to be said was up there as one of the most important games in the clubs history,a relegation playoff against city rivals De La Salle. This fixture had all the makings of a great game with standout players on both sides. This game attracted the biggest attendance in Fraher field this year for a club game with hurling fanatics coming from all over the county to see which team would end up playing Intermediate hurling next year. We started the first half well below our potential and found it hard to get scores with the city team taking a five point lead (0-6 to 0-1) within the first quarter and they kept adding to their tally and led at halftime on a score line of Lismore 0-3 De La Salle 0-12. Five minutes into the second half Maurice hits the net from a close-range free to resurrect our challenge. Three points in succession from Maurice seen us close the gap to within two points with 15 minutes to go (1-10 to 0-15).Then the killer blow came as De La Salle got the goal which really put the game out of our reach and it was the city team who went on to win and secure their hurling status for another year on a score line of Lismore 1-12 De La Salle 1-18. It’s hard to imagine Lismore not playing senior hurling next year as our 46 year senior status comes to end. We have a lot of young players in the panel this year and this blended with our experienced players I’m sure if they stick together and work hard for 2016 then who knows maybe they will be rewarded with senior status again one day. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank the lads that took on the role of management this year, there are too many to mention so thanks very much lads from all in Lismore GAA Club. |
