Senior hurlers outclassed by clinical Mount Sion
Lismore senior hurlers fell at the quarter final hurdle to a very well organised Mount Sion fifteen at the Fraher field venue last Sunday. As mentioned in last week's notes, Lismore knew this was going to be a stern test but were well fancied to come away with the honours following on from a very impressive display V Passage in the group stages. This was not to be however with Mount Sion setting a blistering pace in the first quarter, rattling the net after 4 minutes and tacking on six points from frees and play. Maurice Shanahan steadied the ship from some placed balls but the signs were already looking ominous with the monastery men racing into a 1-07 to 0-04 lead. What was notable was how hard Lismore had to work to get each score with Sion replying almost immediately with ease. Austin Gleeson turned on the style with some beautiful stick work and diagonal play adding to his teams tally with a haul of 4 points. White flags from Shane Heaphy and Stevie Barry and another from Maurice was a comeback of sorts to bring Lismore 4 points adrift but Evan McGrath's accuracy from frees kept the 5 point cushion for Mount Sion going into the half-time break. On resumption of play both Maurice and Evan McGrath exchanged points from placed balls and on the 35th minute Maurice was pulled down in the square to give Lismore a penalty. This was exactly what the black and amber needed to inject urgency and hope into proceedings but Iggy O Regan was to deny any comeback with a fantastic save, one of three in fact throughout the match, to dash any hopes Lismore had. To add insult to injury within a minute Mount Sion had intercepted a loose Lismore poc out and was duly punished to the delight of the blues supporters. Dan Shanahan was introduced in the 42nd minute to try and rescue the situation but was well marshalled throughout. He did however assist in a well taken goal by Paudie Prendergast who rifled one into the Sion net but it was too little, too late. Mount Sion were always in the driving seat here and were able to wind things down comfortably with introducing substitutes late on to send Lismore out of this year's championship. Hopes were high in the cathedral town entering this fixture, maybe a little too high, but we now face a long winter knowing that another chance has slipped us by. What we can take from this however is Lismore have plenty of youth coming through the ranks and their introduction into senior hurling this year will surely stand to them in their development going forward. Team: Seanie Barry, Aaron Whelan, David Prendergast, Michael Fitzgerald, Iarlaith Daly, Anthony McGlone, Shane Heaphy (captain), John Prendergast, Peter O' Keeffe, Stevie Barry, Paudie Prendergast, Finbar Reaney, Jack Prendergast, Maurice Shanahan, Jordan Shanahan. Subs used: Oisin O' Gorman for Peter O' Keeffe, Ray Barry for Finbar Reaney, Dan Shanahan for Jordan Shanahan. The club committee would like to thank Brendan Landers and Dan Shanahan for training the team this year ably assisted by selectors Barney and Seamus Prendergast. Also thank you to players secretary Craig Tobin for keeping each player up to date with proceedings throughout the season. The team management would like to thank Paul Prendergast, Dave Barry, Joe Tobin, Monica Campion and Sean Cummins for all their help during the year. Thank you also to Eddie Nugent and the field committee for having the facilities in pristine condition for matches and training.
