Lismore 4-12 De La Salle 0-07
On Saturday evening last September 23rd all roads lead to Kill GAA Grounds as the Lismore Senior team were eagerly awaiting the County Semi-Final V De La Salle. Having drawn with Cappoquin in the last round robin of the championship, the girls were to play in the semi-final to qualify them for the County Final V Gaultier set for the weekend of October 7th/8th. Throw in for this game was set for 5.30pm and Lismore played with a very strong blustery wind in the first half. It was De La Salles Beth Carton opened the scoring in the first three minutes with a point. It was on the 6th minute when the speedy Caithriona McGlone ran through the De La Salle defense and landed the sliotar to the back of the net. Two minutes later Beth Carton found herself one on one with Goalkeeper Tanya Morrissey and a certain goal was deflected over the bar by the brave Lismore girl (A save that Waterfords Steven O Keeffe would be proud of).At this stage one point separated the sides but this save by Tanya seemed to be the turning point of the game for the Lismore girls and drove them on for the remaining 24 minutes of the half, with some great play form the Lismore backs feeding some well placed balls into their forward line thus setting up some very fine scores. Lismore held De La Salle scoreless to Lismores 2-6 for these 20 minutes ending the half on a score line of Lismore 3-7 De La Salle 0-2. The second half began with the weather to turn very nasty with very heavy wind and rain making play very difficult for both teams. As in the first half it was De La Salles Beth Carton opened the scoring and indeed had three points scored before Aoife Hannon scoring Lismores first point on the 40th minute from a free. Playing conditions at this stage were very tough but both sides played with great determination. Even tho' the Lismore girls were playing against the wind they seemed to be handling the situation very well and held De La Salle on a score line of 0-5 to 1-5 in this half leaving the full time score Lismore 4-12 De La Salle 0-07. The Lismore girls are now qualified for the Senior County Final V Gaultier, which is set for the weekend of October7th/8th at a time and venue to be confirmed. Walsh Park Waterford was the venue on Saturday last May 20th for the 2017 "Denny Buckley Senior League" Final. Lismore and last years County Champions Gall Tir were the contestants. Throw in for this game was set for a 7pm start and both teams were eager to claim the League title. It was Gall Tir who got on the score sheet first with a point on the 4th minute, but it was Lismore who had all the play after this and scored their first point on the 6th courtesy of Caithriona McGlone who scored 2 more points on the 9th and 10th minute before her sister Becky pulled to the back of the net on the 11th minute from a ball that was pulled from mid-field by Marie Russell. Lismore were on fire at this stage and had all the play only letting Gall Tir score only 2 points for the first 12 minutes. Caithriona was on fine form playing at centre forward and scored 2 more points from play on the 13th and 14th minutes before she split the Gall Tir posts from a ball flicked back to her from team captain Nicola. This was not the end of Caithrionas purple patch by no means as she scored 2 more fine points on the 16th from a free and another from play on the 18th. The speedy wing-forward Johanna Houlihan flicked up the sliotar on the run and headed straight for the goal and scored a beautiful point on the 19th minute. This was to be Lismores last score for the remainder of the half and Gall Tir were gaining momento and scored their third point on the 24th minute and again another in the 29th minute from a free. It was into injury time and Gall Tir were pushing on at this stage and were threatening the Lismore backs and scored a goal on the 34th minute leaving only 4 points between the sides going in at half time. Half time score Lismore 1-8 Gall Tir 1-4. The second half began with Lismore coming out of the blocks with great determination as Gall Tirs first half goal giving them a wake up call and Caithriona once more splitting the posts on the 35th minute. Ruth Geoghegan ran at the Gall Tir backs from a ball that was passed to her from a Caithriona McGlone solo run from her own half back line to her forward line and made no mistake and struck to the back of the Gall Tir net getting Lismores 2nd goal on the 37th minute. Caithriona who was in fine form scored two more points from frees on the 38th and 40th minutes, before corner forward Sinead Bennett pulled on a bobbling ball on the Gall Tir goal mouth which once again found the net for Lismores 3rd goal on the 40th minute. Lismore were ruthless at this stage and team captain Nicola found the back of the net a minute later for Lismores 4th goal. Gall Tir had no answer for the advancing Lismore girls and were held scoreless for nearly all of the second half. Caithriona scored another point from a free on the 43rd minute but had to vacate the field on the 47th minute due to an injury to her hand. Nicola scored a fine point on the 49th minute. Marie Russell took over free taking duties and scored a point on the 55th minute which was duely Lismores last point of the game. Gall Tir scored their only 3 points of the half in the last five minutes of the game leaving the final score Lismore 4-14 Gall Tir 1-7. The Denny Buckley Cup was going back to its home town for the fourth time and was presented to team Captain Nicola Morrissey by County Board Chairperson Ita Murphy. Lismore Camogie AGM 2106 was held in The Lismore Community Centre on Saturday night last November 5th at 7pm. Outgoing chairperson Mary Russell stated in her address to the meeting that the hosting of Feile na nGael was the highlight of the year eventho' that there was no silverware won as everyone pulled together to make it a success. she thanked Robbie Sullivan and the underage GAA for all their help and co-operation for the event. She went on to thank all the sponsors for the event and all who helped out foe the weekend. Mary thanked her fellow officers for all their work during the year and all club mentors and trainers for all their hard work and commitment that they put in during the year. Mary thanked the local GAA Club for their great support, such as their field and its facilities for our training and matches as well as the use of the Community Centre for our Feile Fundraising Disco and of course the Feile Barbeque. She thanked Tourin GAA for the use of their field for both matches when the Gaa field was unavailable. Mary thanked the local soccer club for the use of the club house leading up to the Feile when we were handing out their gear and their field for the pre Feile training A huge thanks to Michael O Leary (Red House) who is our Senior team main sponsor for last year and this year and is our sponsor for the next two years. On a negative note, Mary stated the club has no silverware on display this year eventho our Senior teamm and U16 team got to the final. Our failure to complete the minor championship was a disappointment as this is the team that need to be encouraged to feed on to the senior team. She said that special effort should be made for the 2017 season to make sure that we do field a minor team because if we don’t our senior team is going to diminish. At the end of her address Mary said that she was stepping down as chairperson of Lismore Camogie Club and thanked all who supported her in the four years, and what an enjoyable four years it was to see our senior team capturing the long awaited all Ireland Intermediate title that they were so eagerly battling for in the years prior to it, and indeed to be so near to regain the All Ireland title in 2015. This was a huge achievement for the club, the town and the girls and their mentors and an achievement that can be spoken of well into their old age. The hosting of Feile this year was also a very enjoyable event and especially when it ran off so smoothly. The capturing of the U16B and U18 titles in 2014 was a great thrill as well as winning the Feile plate in 2015. Mary said that she's fully sure our club will be back up there again with a bit more work. Mary congratulated the Lismore Intermediate hurling team on capturing the Co Intermediate title winning them senior status again and wished them the best in the Munster Final. She wished the incoming committee all the best for the year ahead.
